At Brook n Wood - October 22nd - 29th 2014

I'm taking advantage of the lull in my airport scheduling and grabbing a week during which I hope to get some nice photos of the fall foliage that NYS is known for.  It's an hour and twenty minutes north up Rte 9 to Elizaville.  Never heard of Elizaville but there's what looks like a very nice family campground:  Brook n Wood Family Campground

What I got when I arrived were showers and scenery very much like home.  What is nice about it is that it remains open until October 31st while other campgrounds researched all close Columbus Day to prepare for the winter season by draining water pipes, etc.

Site #35 way over to the left is wooded and secluded

The week I chose was October 22nd through the 29th.  October 30th is granddaughter, Rebeca's, birthday and I want to be around for that whenever they decide to celebrate it.  As it turns out, it will be celebrated Sunday, the 26th while I'm away.  Sorry, Beca.  The website tells all if you care to check out the link above.

After friends told me about the Elizaville Diner (which can be found if you use Tivol, NY as its address), I decided to try it and time the adventure such that I could have lunch there and arrive at the campsite five miles further by 3:00 pm.

Thanks to the "OPEN" sign, I entered.  Not a soul around.  Casey, the very pretty, young waitress was the only one in the place with a few in the back behind the scenes doing the cooking and cleaning.  I had a tasty lunch and ordered baked meatloaf and mashed potatoes to go for my dinner tonight along with their homemade cream of corn soup and homemade rice pudding for dessert.

I arrived at the campsite by 3 after traveling a mere 87 miles.  After meeting Vanessa, the owner and registering, I made my way to site 35 which is situated sort of on a cul-de-sac at the end of Mulberry Lane.  Very remote.  There's no one around here either.  Vanessa and husband, Joe, were the only humans seen so far.  Oh, there are lots of big rigs throughout but you can see they're all bundled up for the season with no occupants.  My site 35 is about as remote as you can get in this campsite.  Weather?  Drizzly, windy, with showers due and the temperature at 50 degrees.  The first acorn to drop and hit Winnie as I sit under this canopy of oak scared the bejesus outta me but now I know that no one is throwing rocks at me.....what I don't know is when the next one is going to fall.  I'm looking forward the rain's patter on the roof tonight.

If it's not raining tomorrow, I'll hike the property and share photos.  Now, it's time for dinner.

  1. I hope there are no boggie men around. Better lock Winnie up tight tonight.
