Days 39-45 - Myrtle Beach, SC - Friday

Lakewood Camping Resort  2/24/2015 - 3/3/2015
5901 S. Kings Hwy
Myrtle Beach, SC 29575

Friday was Sun Day

So there it was...at long last.  Hidden though it was, it was the brightest day I've had since last Wednesday in Bluffton.  What a treat it was and how invigorating.  The temperatures were still in the high 30's and due to reach 50°.  Unfortunately, with the good news there was bad.  LOL.

Sanderling........
Went to turn on the hot water and there wasn't any.  Oh, there was hot water, it just didn't flow.  Cold water okay.  Turned the by-pass valve and water continued to flow but once switched back so water would pass through the heater, nothing but a loud "clunk".

Called Winnebago techs, "Check valve problem."  After 3 or 4 phone calls to see how soon I could get it repaired/replaced, I spoke with Russ at Camping World at 2295 Dick Pond Road, Myrtle Beach, SC. 7 miles and 15 minutes from the campground.  Told him my situation; that I went through Good Sam RV Tech Service and the other Camping World nearby; that I'm leaving Tuesday and can't go another 12 days without hot water.  He scheduled me for 2:00 pm this afternoon.  I unhooked, packed up and arrived at CW hoping for the best, expecting the worst: "Sorry, not covered under warranty"; "Sorry, we don't have the part in stock"; "Sorry, it's warranty service.  You have to have it repaired where you purchased it"; "Sorry, you do need a part; can you come back next week?  We should have it by then."
....the bird that plays tag with the waves.
The outcome?  After two hours, they found the problem (a tiny plastic plunger in the check valve broke), they had the part, replaced it, tested it, and it didn't cost a penny.  Whew!  How nice was that?  Kudos to Russ and the folks at Camping World (Myrtle Beach) for making a potentially big problem, painless.  Thank you also, Sharon, for making me believe "what goes around, comes around."

Warbler (?)

While waiting, I had to browse the huge store.  I've never seen such a huge inventory of all things RV.  At Good Sam prices, I walked out with over $50.00 worth of supplies that I needed (maybe) to replenish supplies in Winnie.  Add to that, a stop at a Super Wal-Mart store where I replenished foods that I needed (maybe).  Okay, so the large Hershey Cookies n' Cream chocolate bars were a treat.  All that time on the phone going through warranty red tape with two or three affiliated organizations with Good Sam/Camping World and finally getting it done today necessitated such a reward.

And so, my last weekend in SC sneaks past me.  With 12 days left, a closer look at the upcoming weather for points north will be my main attraction.  As I write this Friday night, what do I see? 3" Sunday into Monday.   More decisions coming up.
Good night.

Days 39-45 - Myrtle Beach, SC

Lakewood Camping Resort  2/24/2015 - 3/3/2015
5901 S. Kings Hwy
Myrtle Beach, SC 29575

A huge campground/resort.  If you strain your eyes,
you'll locate little O me oceanfront.
What greeted me as I began
to hookup power.
Wow, it's been all about weather hasn't it?   I left Bluffton, SC and the temperature was touching 40°.  As I continued northward I watched it drop and usher in a drizzly rain for the rest of the day and night.  Traffic was okay but lots of care needed when the big boy semi's blew by me and left a sometimes blinding, misty spray in their wake.  Once off I-95 it was I-521 and SR-17.  SR-17 was notable.  Straight as far as the eye could see.  When I approached that point in the distance I never thought I'd reach, the slight curve to the left or right revealed another long stretch of road disappearing at the horizon again. This was repeated over and over again as I drove northward.  All I saw along this route were churches, churches, and more churches interspersed once in a while with the converted, run down, dilapidated, rusting mobile homes that I find so prevalent in the south along I-95.
My arrival was greeted with a coating of ice on everything.  Roads were never a problem for driving.  I didn't bother hooking up to city water and relied on my fresh water tank that trickled all night.  No problems.  In my third day here I have yet to see sunshine and temperatures have not gone above 38°.  Yesterday?  Rain all day, heavy at times.

The campground is huge but, as expected, sparsely populated.  Photos below show a 360° perspective of what I see.  I am facing east and the sound of the surf is just audible over the on and off running of the furnace and blower.

Bob & Mary

Through the efforts of Wendy, contact was made with mutual friends and fellow retirees, Bob & Mary.  They were, coincidentally, visiting friends here in Myrtle Beach and were staying in their time-share just about 7 miles away from Lakewood Campground.  They came by to visit Winnie and took me back to their place where I enjoyed a delicious dinner with good wine and good friends.  Again, because we go way back and have wonderful memories and history, it was a time to catch up and brag.

SOME VIEWS OF THE CAMPGROUND & OCEAN

East. Yes, there's an ocean out there.

I saw that sea gull before...I think in
Daytona....what are the chances? LOL

Something caught my eye while walking
back up the dune to my RV.

What a nice treat on a dreary, overcast day.

You have to be bundled if you want to walk the beach

And that's the latest from Myrtle Beach.  The only new event I'm expecting worthy of another blog entry will be a sunrise.  Ha!  If not, then I'll see you in Virginia Beach where, at the present time, they're experiencing snow showers with temp at 34°.  The countdown shows 14 days, 6 hours, and 41 minutes until Reality.  Take care, stay warm, and be careful.

Days 35 - 38 Bluffton, SC - Last Day

Visiting Roger & Wendy - 2/21/2015 - 2/24/2015

My last day visiting R&W was a busy one.  My two docents, who don't know the meaning of "sit and relax," took me "for a ride." 40 miles and 50 minutes later, I was experiencing the rugged, untouched pine forests and low lying, dense palms in Hunting Island State Park.  And what a wonderful experience that was.  Located on adjacent property is the Hunting Island Campground which we visited.  Result?  I've booked 6 nights next January.  That's the first available date for an ocean front campsite.  See photos below.

To find  a more busy, involved, eager to please and compatible couple would be a very difficult task.  They have assimilated all Sun City, Beaufort, and the surrounding area has to offer and I thank them for sharing it proudly with me.  Rather than bore you with over 120 pix, I chose my favorites.

My first lunch and the Okatie Creek Golf Club's
clubhouse with my docents Wendy & Roger

Hunting Island's eroding shoreline looking north
on a cold, drizzly, dismal day.

The dense woodland where "GI Jane" was filmed.

The lighthouse at Hunting Island is the only
publicly accessible historic lighthouse in South
Carolina.  It dates from the 1870's and stands 170'.

The very long fishing pier beyond the Nature Center
reaching out over 1,000'.

Typical Hunting Island State campground.  Very shaded with
just water and electric hookups.  I've booked site #48 for 6 nights.

The view from Winnie from the site I chose.

Back from Hunting Island State Park and a tour
of historic Beaufort, SC.

A typical street view with densely draping moss
adorning tree branches as well as power lines.

Brave Wendy, with the southern blood, was
agreeable to dine al fresco and brave the
cold, dismal day.

I thought this was a nice touch that would add
 points for the restaurant.

Yes, she's freezing.

The northern Yankee found it refreshing.

Recent renovations and major shore front improvements
has made this location a most beautiful addition for
the seasonal tourists to enjoy.

On our way back to Bluffton, I couldn't resist
this shot while at a traffic light.  That about
covers it all, doesn't it?

That night, the ultimate treat, pizza!! But this place
is know for their BIG slices......

....many choices for toppings. Me? I'm a plain cheese
kinda guy.  Sorry.  Surprisingly, the recommended
"thick crust" was crisp and not doughy at all.

Thank you, once again, Roger & Wendy for everything.  See you next January with a visit to Hunting Island and hope to see you at Croton's RV park this summer.

Days 35-38 - Bluffton, SC

Visiting Roger & Wendy - 2/21/2015 - 2/24/2015

Friday morning, my last day on Jekyll Island, GA, I woke up and saw the temperature was at 25° and immediately knew.....there would be no water.  Sure enough.  Because the outside water hose froze, I had to turn on my water pump and draw from the fresh water tank which did not freeze.  The veteran campers, of course, knowing there would be a freeze, kept their tap running with a trickle all night and with the grey water valve open, the cold presented no problems for them.  My fresh water tank, at full capacity, holds 31 gallons.  I'm 1/3 full, so there's about 10 gallons left which will be mainly used for flushing.  Washing dishes and me can wait.  I purposely keep the water level low for fuel efficiency.  You may remember from your physics days that a gallon of water weighs 8½ pounds, so carrying an extra 260+ pounds isn't really needed when everywhere I travel provides fresh water.  But....in emergencies (?) like frozen water lines, it comes in handy.  I will replenish that supply before I leave, thus contradicting what I just wrote.  My next concern was the expanding water against pipes and tanks.  As it turned out, the freeze was not a prolonged one.  It rose to 31° by 10 a.m. and water flowed at 11:45 a.m. so I lucked out on that score.

I could not leave Jekyll Island Saturday morning without a stop along the main road to capture the beautiful shoreline that certainly looks like all the shorelines of our beautiful Atlantic seasboard.  I hope to have a campsite view like this in either Myrtle or Virginia Beach in the coming days, assuming the snow has melted.  We shall see.

The 2 hour drive from Jekyll IslandGA was a good one. Normal flow of traffic with one stop for fuel and I arrived to meet Roger and Wendy in just under two hours.  I followed them to the location where Winnie would sit parked in a designated area while I enjoyed the comforts of home for the next two days.  The Okatie Creek Golf Club's clubhouse was located nearby and we had a most delicious lunch.  As usual, R&A are the best host and hostess at making their guests feel at home.  As in the past, I always made it a point to stop and visit on my way down or back from my month-long stay in Daytona Beach ShoresFlorida.  Between our mutual friends, our retirement, our teaching days together in Blue Mountain Middle School, the adventures, progress, and pride that we have in our children and grandchildren, we have plenty of topics to talk about as we catch up and brag.

Three cheese stuffed mushrooms
and beer battered coconut shrimp.
In addition, not shown, was a hot
cup of potato soup with
bits of bacon.

Sunday's lunch was Jameson's Charhouse at the Hidden Cypress Golf Club's clubhouse.  Afterwards, R&W left for Hilton Head Island for the show, "The Ring of Fire," the story of Johnny Cash.  Tickets were purchased well before my arrival.

Relaxing in the serene tranquility
of a most natural setting.

That gave me the entire afternoon to lounge on their screened in porch and wallow in the wonders of nature that abound right in their backyard.   I observed wading shore birds including herons, egrets and a stork.  Flitting around in the trees or skimming over the mirror-like lagoon were Kingfishers, crows, cardinals  and a couple of song birds. Unfortunately, I could only capture photos of those shown below.

A Snowy Egret

...reached our side of the shore to
continue feeding and displaying
a not so pretty face.
Across the lagoon, a Wood Stork
waded the perimeter and
eventually...

Spooked, the stork said good-bye......
.....as did the egret

After 35 days living in Winnie, it was nice
to sit down to a home-cooked meal and the
usual elegant setting so typical of Wendy.

Spinach salad with pear, crumbled goat
cheese, and crushed walnuts.

Baked chicken Florentine with spinach and
sauteed spinach in garlic and olive oil.

Tiramisu with a scoop (or two) of
vanilla ice cream for dessert....a perfect ending
to a delicious meal.  Thank you.

Although I've never had a bad night's sleep
in Winnie's queen sized bed, I have to admit,
it was a real treat sleeping in a real bed.
And so, as Day 36 ends, I look forward to the next.  There's a couple of days of rain in the forecast but it doesn't matter when there are so many other things to look forward to. As you know, all you need is good wine, good food, and good friends to make any day or situation so much better.  I've always been fortunate to have all three.
